INTRODUCTION

The growth in the marine and offshore industry in Singapore is expected to be robust and will continue to require supply of trained manpower for the sector. The Singapore marine and offshore industry includes ship repair, shipbuilding, rig-building and offshore engineering, and other marine supporting services.

The Diploma (Conversion) in Marine and Offshore Technology replaces the previous Specialist Diploma in Marine and Offshore Technology. It comprises two Post-Diploma Certificate courses and can be completed in 1 year on a part-time basis.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course provides participants with the essential knowledge and skills for a career in the marine and offshore industry and is designed for career conversion to prepare engineering diploma and degree graduates of other disciplines to broaden their employment prospects in the industry.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Working professionals or individuals who wish to learn and broaden their employment prospects in the marine and offshore industry. This course is also an alternative to the Bridging Programme which is mandatory for candidates who have been granted conditional admission to the SIT-Newcastle University degree programmes in Marine Technology.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A recognised polytechnic diploma in any engineering discipline.

COURSE OUTLINE

The new CET Post-Diploma (300 hours) comprises two Certificates to be taken in sequential order as the overall curriculum is designed to build higher level of difficulty by the second semester.

The two Certificates are


POST-DIPLOMA CERTIFICATE IN NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND MARINE ENGINEERING (SEMESTER 1)


Fundamentals of Marine Engineering (60 hours)
  • This module provides participants with basic understanding of marine piping, pumping, heating & cooling, and auxiliary machinery that support the diesel propulsion plant. The module also covers the fundamental knowledge of marine main propulsion system, alternators and steering gears. Basic knowledge of marine instrumentation and control systems is also introduced.


  • Fundamentals of Naval Architecture (60 hours)
  • This module provides the participants with the fundamentals of various types of ship, the layout of the vessel with the main compartments, and the structural components of ships. It also covers calculations related to areas, volumes, centre, second moment of area, and other basic parameters related to geometry of ships. Calculations related to weight and centre of gravity are also introduced in this module.


  • POST-DIPLOMA CERTIFICATE IN OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY (SEMESTER 2)


    Fundamentals of Marine Offshore Design (60 hours)
  • This module provides the students with the basic knowledge and understanding of intact stability and trim of a ship. It includes calculations on stability of ships according to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requirements. The module also provides students with understanding of damaged stability, ship launching, tonnage, and load line assessment of ships. Longitudinal stretch and resistance of ships, and concepts of ship design, are also covered in the module.


  • Fundamentals of Offshore Oil & Gas Technology (60 hours)
  • The module aims to provide students with a broad overview of the offshore oil and gas industry in the ASEAN region and other parts of the world. This module covers fundamental understanding of the current concepts of upstream offshore drilling, production technology, working principles of marine offshore systems, topside production modules and subsea modules. Considerations for field layout and the entire lifecycle of oil and gas platforms from procurement, construction, commissioning, operations and decommissioning would be discussed. Basic chemistry and properties of natural gas and oil would also be discussed.


  • Fundamentals of Offshore Engineering (60 hours)
  • The module aims to help students understand the design considerations for offshore structures. In the analysis and design of offshore structures, students would be introduced to the API Recommended Practices and ISO 19900 standards for offshore platform design. Topics covered range from various wave theories, diffraction theory, Morison’s theory and spectral modelling approaches to offshore industries. The module will also provide opportunities to explore the capabilities of a software package for structural analysis of offshore platforms. Overall, students will be exposed to the latest engineering concepts and practices in offshore design, construction and installation.



  • ASSESSMENT

    Course work, and examinations.

    AWARD/CERTIFICATION/ACCREDITATION

    Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon successful completion of each Post-Diploma Certificate course.

    Graduates will be awarded the Diploma (Conversion) in Marine & Offshore Technology by Ngee Ann Polytechnic upon the successful completion of the two Certificates.

    ADDITIONAL NOTES

    Relevant supporting documents to be submitted to CET Academy include:

    1. Photocopies (both sides) of NRIC for Singaporeans and PRs; and Employment Pass, S Pass or Work Permit for foreign applications. Employment Pass, S Pass or Work Permit must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of commencement of the course, otherwise an original company letter stating that the employer will extend the work pass is required.

    2. 1 passport-sized photographs (we do not accept scanned photographs)

    3. Copies of relevant academic/ educational certificates
    (Notorial translation for certificates not in English. Notarial translation is available at respective embassies or the Supreme Court tel: 63360644)

    4. Documents of employment records (if applicable)

    5. For company sponsored applicants, please provide letter of support on the company letter head (Letter should be signed off with the contact details and designation of the signatory)
