So who says you can’t enjoy beautiful views in Singapore? When I went to the Marina Barrage for an evening/night picnic, the sunset was SPECTACULAR. It was seriously gorgeous; didn’t feel like Singapore at all! We were so far away from it all (felt like the edge of SG or something) and looking down at everything felt so surreal. You really just kinda relax, forget everything and detach yourself from civilisation. I mean, just look at this! Epic:

It was too bad though, that it rained earlier. The grass was all muddy and walking on it was kind of gross. I was wearing black flats… SUCH a mistake, I swear. Never wear these or flip flops or heels. TERRIBLE for the place when it rains. Sneakers or sneaker flats would probably be the best bet. Ugh. It was unfortunate because we couldn’t sit on the grass, which would have been so nice! I really, really think they should replace everything with astroturf so you won’t have to bother about mud and rain anymore!

We brought really yummy, healthy food: carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, salad! Low-fat crackers, healthy chicken sandwiches (mayo-free for me, mayonnaise is grosssss)… I think the ‘unhealthiest’ thing we had was the gummies. Really shows that healthy food doesn’t always have to taste awful! (: Oh, and don’t go there without water or anything ‘cos there’s almost nothing there, except a Chinese restaurant and an overpriced like whoa cafe. Maybe you’re willing to pay like $2.50 for a small bottle of water but, for someone like me who drinks water nonstop, it would be waaaaaaaaay too costly.
One thing to note is that it does get awfully dark once the sun sets (though the night city lights are awesome! Singapore almost looks like Hong Kong). The lighting there is really dim, so it’s perfect for ~~romance and all that, but don’t go there expecting to be able to read or do homework or whatever. And you get privacy because, even if there are a lot of people, they mostly just leave you alone.

So Marina Barrage is pretty cool.
Nice view and even nicer breeze because it’s so near the sea. Getting there’s not the easiest but it really is worth it! The best way would be to take an MRT to Marina Bay, walk to the shuttle bus bus stop and just wait. A bus to the barrage comes every 15 minutes. Take note, though, that area is REALLY dusty (construction sites EVERYWHERE) so prepare tissues and lots of water while you wait.
Did I mention that you can also catch the occasional event performance there? For instance, NP’s hip percussion group Baracuda Batacuda (one of our hottest CCAs!) will be performing on 29 Sep during the PUB Watermark Award Ceremony held at the Marina Barrage.
So go on, gather a few of your buddies for your very own night picnic here. You wouldn’t regret it!
