It’s that time of the year again. I’m suffering from post exam/term/school blues. Okay, before all you people who’re swamped with school work start to throw expletives at your screen right now, let me explain myself. The major holidays for us poly students encompass a grand total of 2 months. Give and take, 7 weeks. Now that’s alot of time to spend sitting on your butt in front of the computer before even facebook starts to get old (trust me, that’s possible).
So year after year, sem after sem, i promise myself i’ll find a part-time job to aid my boredom and empty pockets. I’ve had 5 of these long holidays since i’ve started schooling in ngee ann (i’m on my sixth). And every holiday i end up being too lazy to go find work. Before i know it, the new sem creeps up and i tell myself to just let this holiday pass. NOW, on to Plan B.
Plan B : Work my socks off and pump iron in a gym every day of the holidays till i look like an indian hulk hogan in time for next sem. Yes, i’m no different from every guy, who’d like nothing than to see/hear whispers behind my back that i look good, coming back after the hols! Again, maybe it’s a shaun thing. Procrastination and I seem to be good friends and I end up looking just the same come end of the holidays.
Now this holiday, my last before i graduate, i’m hoping it’s gonna be different. For one, i’ve gotten my heavy behind off my couch and have gone for the gym orientation at our school’s gym, namely, GymWerkz.
Unlike the cheaper gyms splattered around our island, which charge $2.50 per entry and which make me queue behind 3 people to use just about any machine (everyone’s packed in like sardines), NP’s gym offers much more. I should have gone for the orientation from my first year!

For one, there’s ample room and lots of alternatives in terms of both free weights and machines. Another eye-opener is this electronic system at GymWerkz called VIVO (no not the mall) which tracks your progress for EACH machine you use. Best of all, it’s stored in their database so everytime you wanna hop onto a machine, you key in your IC number and voila, you get your previous best time, reps, and what have yous.
This is the first gym in Asia to encorporate this electronic tracker of sorts, and i have to admit it’s a pretty clever idea. Also, did i mention that entry is completely FREE for students?
I’ve been going to the school gym for 3 weeks now and the thing i look forward to most is the warm showers they provide, another thing the outside gyms i’ve been to can’t match. Not bad looking girls and guys around the gym in ngee ann as well! Hmm. I am looking forward to next sem already. (:
